Lab-grown diamond manufacturers: a guide for buyers in USA
A few US companies grow diamonds, but most lab-grown stones sold in the US are grown and cut in India or China. Here is how US jewellers and traders can buy from the grower: the local hub, labelling rules, customs points and working hours.
The local trade
New York's Diamond District (47th Street) is the main trading hub, with large wholesale markets in Los Angeles and other cities.
A few US companies grow diamonds, but most lab-grown stones sold in the US are grown and cut in India or China. Local wholesalers give you speed and memo; buying from the grower gives you price and control over the goods. Many buyers use both.
Labelling
The FTC Jewelry Guides (16 CFR Part 23) say a lab-grown stone must be clearly described as laboratory-grown, laboratory-created, or [manufacturer]-created, or by another word that makes clear it is not mined. "Synthetic" is allowed but not required.
Customs and tax
Polished lab-grown diamonds enter under HTS heading 7104. US tariffs on Indian goods changed several times in 2025 and 2026, so get the current rate from your customs broker before you agree a landed price.
This is general guidance, not customs advice. Rules and rates change; confirm them with a licensed customs broker before you agree a landed price.
Working with a grower
India is 9.5 to 10.5 hours ahead of New York. A supplier's evening is your morning, so an early call works for both sides.
Ask for quotes in USD and for the stone-by-stone list in the same format your inventory or e-commerce feed uses. It saves hours of re-keying.
- Run the 10 checks before you pay.
- Send the same RFQ to three suppliers.
- Ask for insured shipping to your door and agree the Incoterm in writing.
- Start with a trial parcel and check every report number on arrival.
